By the middle of the 19th century conditions were created for a powerful development of the cultural scene and the appearance of cultural institutions (theaters, libraries, museum). Over time, the cultural life of the city became richer and more diverse. Beside literature, music and fine arts met with great success. They evolved under the influence of European expressions and styles and together with the native tradition, it created a specific Belgrade style of great distinction by the end of the century.

A prosperous middle-class emerged which helped to further develop science and culture via its numerous charitable foundations.
