In everyday life, changes were evident in fashion and customs, but the most obvious consequences of the modernized social life were apparent in the fields of nutrition and housing.

The food and cuisine of Belgrade’s inhabitants portrayed its history, character and ethnic diversity. The history of Belgrade can be traced by its food and preparation; the dialogue of the Serbian population with the other ethnic groups; modernism severely opposed to tradition.

The population bought its groceries at the Great Market, the fist market in Zeleni Venac or in shops. The markets were established depending on the needs in other parts of the town, in Palilula, Cvetni Trg etc.
