Neither to East nor to West – Nonalignment movement

 

The opening towards the world marked the fifthies and the sixties of the XX century. In 1954 Belgrade became the meeting place in which the statemen laid the foundation of the policy of non-alignment. Josip Broz Tito, Gamel Abdel Nasser and Djavaharlal Nehru were the founders of the Nonalignment Movement. Belgrade was the host of the I Conference of the Nonaligned States, held in 1961. Belgrade at that time was the center of the world diplomacy. Until the ninties of the last century Belgrade was the venue of many international conferences. Belgrade, a secure and always hospitable city, welcomed foreign statesmen with flowers and people lined up in the streets.
